The name is two halves, and neither is a word you’d find in Italian.
Tung is Indonesian onomatopoeia — the noise a kentongan makes when you hit it. A kentongan is a hollow wooden slit drum, usually a length of bamboo or a carved log, and villages and neighbourhoods across Indonesia have used them for generations as a public address system: one rhythm for a meeting, another for a fire, another to wake everybody up.

It was part of a local trend of “anomali” AI characters: absurd generated creatures with strange names and repetitive audio. Within weeks the character had escaped Indonesian TikTok entirely.

Is He Italian or Indonesian?
Indonesian. This is the single most common confusion about him, and the answer isn’t complicated.
He went viral at the same moment as “Italian brainrot” — the early-2025 wave of AI-generated characters with sing-song pseudo-Italian names like Tralalero Tralala, Bombardiro Crocodilo and Ballerina Cappuccina. The genre got named after the loudest members, and everything that arrived alongside it got filed under the same label. So Tung Tung Tung Sahur is usually listed as an Italian brainrot character despite the creator, the language, the drum and the tradition all being Indonesian.
